Desert ProjectI absolutely adore traditional animation. Being quite bad at drawing, I have gravitated towards 3D, but the challenge and art style of 2D animation has always fascinated me. There's something beautiful about a hand-drawn animation, the way it flickers on the screen, perfect because of its imperfections.
It was this fascination that drew me towards experimenting with the art form, and having a computer to help me with onion skinning and keeping a constant playback speed meant that it was very accessible. I started off by creating a couple of concepts for my first character. I ended up jumping in straight away without finalising the character design, however the concepts helped me cut out the unimportant details and made the animation easier. I based the shot off of a short film idea a friend had told me, in order to develop a prototype of the short film. This shot features the meeting of two older children, and the separation between them that stops them from embracing childhood together. The action is the girl is returning home, when she catches a runaway ball. The ball's owner runs up, but spots the girl in her burka, and is intimidated by it. She passes him the ball, and he snatches it from her, retreating quickly from this "stranger". |
